Biographer T.J. Stiles Picks Three Can’t-Miss Events at the Bay Area Book Festival

The Pulitzer Prize winner dog-ears a few of his festival faves.

Load up your canvas totes: This month the Bay Area Book Festival returns to Berkeley, where the city’s most celebrated biographer, T.J. Stiles, will join more than 250 writers specializing in everything from politics to sci-fi. We asked Stiles, a two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize, to bookmark a few must-see presentations. Apr. 28–29

Terese Marie Mailhot, Tommy Orange, and Katherena Vermette
“This talk reveals the surpassing excellence of current native writing—like Tommy Orange’s stunning There There, which is set mostly in Oakland.”

Joyce Carol Oates
“One of the festival’s strengths: bringing in a literary giant, Joyce Carol Oates, to chat with Bay Area writers including Scott Saul and the X-Acto-sharp critic Ismail Muhammad.”

Jonathan Kauffman
“In such a crazy political era, it will be a pleasure to focus on cooking when Alice Waters talks to food writer Jonathan Kauffman, author of the smart new book Hippie Food.”
